Interview with Toronto's DJ FAZIO!

DJ Fazio - Toronto Nightclub DJ

Date:11/26/2005

Alright Fazio, lets get some of the basics out for the party people. When did you first start doing club events, how old were you when you first started spinning, just give us some Fazio info??!!

My first real club event was at Palazzo Nightclub all ages hosted by Domenic from Club Scene Magazine back in 2002. The place was jumpin' & packed with kids everywhere, @ that time I was using my old DJ name "DJ Slippery Sam" but that nickname is another story lol.

When I first started spinning i was 12 years old, the love for music began when I was just a little kid when I was around 3-4 years old. My parents had a great old school collection of disco & Italian music & my big brother had the freestyle & rap music which today is called hip hop. I had the best DJ equipment a 12 year old can possibly have 2 Technics SL-1200 Silver turntables & a Pyramid Mixer. What missions to get those turntables & mixer but it was worth it. I didn't have a job cause i was in school & I didn't want to ask my parents either so one day I had a card sale in front of my house & lucky me all it took was one customer & he was Angelo my mail man. He thought I was crazy to sell my Wayne Gretzky rookie followed by other greats but I told him I wanted to become Toronto's best DJ. He wrote me a cheque & I cashed it the next day, I then bought my Technics 1200 turntables, mixer & my first piece of vinyl Afrikaa Bambaataa - Planet Rock. I then began to master the art of beat mixing, no headphones, nothing... I was broke lol. I began doing my school dances shortly after & then when i graduated from highschool I got to DJ my own graduation, that was an experience of a lifetime.

What music inspirations did you have while growing up?

Wow, so many greats & role models in my era. Let me see U.T.F.O. - RUN DMC - ERIC B & RAKIM - AFRIKAA BAMBATTA - BIG DADDY KANE - SPECIAL ED - KRS ONE - MC LYTE - QUEEN LATIFAH - JAZZY JEFF & THE FRESH PRINCE - PUBLIC ENEMY & LL COOL  just to name a few great RAP stars & role models I looked up to. I had the ADDIDAS track suits just like RUN DMC & the brass knuckles too, I never used them though they were just for looks lol. I also enjoyed listening to stuff like Anita Ward - Michael Jackson - Grandmaster Flash - Cheryl Lynn - Chaka Khan etc. Italian music played a big role in my life as well especially coming from an Italian background.

Where can we find you droppin all the hottest joints, and where have you played before?

You can check me out every Friday Night inside the "FLUID LOUNGE" alongside my boy MC JAY T. I've been at FLUID LOUNGE for almost 4 years now & It's actually where the name DJ Fazio was born. The place has alot of great memories, we laughed, cried, & had the best times of our lives in there, It's home!.

Saturday Nights im at the new & state of the art nightlcub "LEVEL NIGHTCLUB". I call LEVEL the sister to REPUBLIK NIGHTCLUB because the way they are designed, both great venues!.

I know you've been DJ'ing for years now, but you must remember what type of turntables started it all off for you ... I know you must have started on Belt Drive!

Actually my dad's little 8track, Turntable stereo that we had in our dining room LOL. oh my... First lets start with the 8track tapes, I would tape over my dad's Italian 8 track tapes to record my favourite RAP show the FANTASTIC VOYAGE PROGRAM with RON NELSON & DJ X from 88.1 Saturday afternoons. Oh lord I got in so much trouble & even took a beating or two lol but it was worth it. DJ X played my favourite stuff & I couldn't help it Rap music played a big role in my life. The turntable he had with that stereo was pure OLDSCHOOL, 100% belt drive proof, no pitch control, an antique needle & the switch to change the LP to 33/45 lol. I would scratch on it too it was fun times.

What type of equipment are you using now?

Technology has changed big time but I still have my Technics SL 1200's turntables. I also have the PIONEER CDJ 1000 MK2 CD PLAYERS, DJ-M500 PIONEER MIXER, SERATO SCRATCH, Roland Samplers & other DJ toys as well. It's very expensive gear but worth every penny.

Since we're on that topic do you remember what were the first records you bought that started off the career of DJ Fazio?

Wow the first batch of vinyl I bought when I started as FAZIO was stuff like Sean Paul - Notorious B.I.G. - 2 Pac - Snoop Dogg - Jay-Z the Diwali Riddim was a killer at the clubs. One of the greatest Riddims ever made, every track was a club banger. Sean Paul - Get Busy - Lumidee - Never Leave You - Elephant Man - City Lock - Wayne Wonder - No Letting Go etc.

Do you still go diggin' (searching/buying records) in crates at the same spots?

No doubt im still a vinyl junkie deep inside & I love to polish up my vinyl collection cause it has alot of history for me. I search for alot of stuff on the net that i need especially the hard to find stuff & I also go see my good friends at PLAY DE RECORD & DJ DEPOT. For any other DJ's out there make sure you take good care of your vinyl.

You must still have some ol'school mixtapes you've made in the past...do you remember any of the tracks that you used to throw on there?

My big brother Ross actually kept all my mixtapes. I would name them 2 the Rhythm & it had stuff like, Rhythm Is A Dancer,  Show Me Love , I'm In Love With You, Magic Carpet Ride, Samba, I'm Hot For You, Fluxland - The Chant (World Cup 1990!).. GREAT MEMORIES!!.

Did you start off at doing house parties or did you just go right into the club scene?

House party's is where it was at baby!... I started doing my friends house party's just to build a name. I then started doing my school dances & my friends bars & cafes on ST.CLAIR. The place was called YUMMY'S best times down in that place, I would role my speakers from my house all the way through the ally's to get them to YUMMY'S LOL. Capaciy was like 90 people & 600 would show up, we had great times inside YUMMY'S. I then did the World Cup road party's in Little Italy when Italy would win there games. 100 000 people dancing the night away right in front of me, that is when DJ Slippery Sam was born in the summer of 1990.

So whats your forte? Mixing...DMC..?

My forte would have to be URBAN music but i play it all & enjoy it all. House - Dance - Old School - Funk - Soul - doesn't matter to me. I'm there to keep the people happy & be creative with my mixing so that that music is flowing & everyone is having a great time.

Have you always ran with the same crew, or have you worked with different groups?

Well i started with Domenic from Clubscene Magazine doing all ages partys for him & a few 19+ clubs as well, but then I was introduced to Jay T from Jay T & Company & started doing the majority of his events. I've been with Jay T since 2003 almost 3 years now & together we have accomplished so much, we not only became co-workers but also best friends. I've worked with many other promoters through out the years such as B&A, Quiet Storm, Bounce, Hype, A/D Ent, Intense, & Alliance Ent.

On BeforeLastCall.com the party people continue to see pics of you with celebrities in the gallery section. Can you give us a list of celebrities you have met? (check below for pictures)

Working @ Fluid not only made me a name for myself but also gave me the opportunity to meet & greet great celebrities such as 50 Cent, Lil' Jon, Sean Paul, Glen Lewis, Kardinal Offishall, Mickey Rourke, Snoop Dogg, Allan Iverson, Massari, Loon, E3, & many more. 50 Cent i helped him shoot his video "SO AMAZING" off the Massacre album @ Fluid on mothers day 2005. Lil' Jon, Jay T & I managed to book that through his agent on our friday night party at FLUID. The rest of the celebs I met either on the Friday night or on the Wed night @ Fluid. It will be a pleasure to provide pictures to BEFORELASTCALL of the celebs that i have photos with so that they can share with the masses.

From your standpoint, is it still the same feeling as it was in the beginning of your career to see people jamming to the tracks your droppin or has the feelin changed?

I enjoy the feeling more now, not that i didn't enjoy it back then but i feel that the music has changed & I think we have more selection now & better beats. I love it when im dropping a BIG tune & the masses start chanting the words to the track or when the hands go up in the air & people are jumpin' everywhere. My blood begins to boil & I get chills so it pumps me up to go even crazier on the decks.

Do you see yourself continuing on with DJ'ing, or maybe expanding on to producing or another aspect of the music business?

I have a few other mountains to climb through out this journey so I will continue to climb those mountains & strive for my goals. They can get rocky at times but you have to know how to overcome them. I've always loved the art of production actually in my next mixtape Black Frequency Vol.3 I will have my own beats on my cd so that people can enjoy. All the clubbers who come out to my nights will receive a copy of it for free once its released so I will keep BEFORELASTCALL posted on that.  After my DJ career I would like to stay involved with the music but open up a DISC JOCKEY franchise, i figure go big or go home so thats something I will pursue when the time comes most definately.

Any words for the up and coming DJ's trying to make it into the club industry? If so, did you learn any lessons when entering into the scene that might be able to help out the inspiring DJ's ?

To all my fellow up & coming DJ's i have the most respect for all of yall, keep your heads up because it's tough to break into the scene. Keep practicing & release those mix tapes get them out to every club, promoter, radio station even clothing stores like urban behaviour, gap, everywhere because you never know where you will hear your stuff played next. People talk whether it is good or bad but if it's good the good news spreads through the grapevine so does the bad stuff dont get me wrong but your hard work will pay off.

Aight man this has been fun, but tell the party people what hot tracks they will be hearing you drop at the club when they come to check you.

WOW! so much new beats lets see first off I would like to tell everyone that I will be the first DJ to be breaking in Italian Hip Hop & R&B to Canada that is something I have been working very hard on over seas & now here. I am actually releasing my first Italian Hip Hop cd called "L'Italia Che Spacca" which means ITALY THAT BREAKS. The cd is hosted by big artists such as Gemelli Diversi, Articolo 31, Piotta, Cor Veleno, Clubdogo & many more great Italian hip hop stars. My goal is to make it big just like reggaeton so be ready to hear a couple of Italo Hip Hop tracks played in my sets you will be blown away. Juelz Santana has a new album out definately will be playing his stuff, Remy Ma, Busta Rhymes, Sean Paul, even new Notorious B.I.G.!!, new Jagged Edge, Ginuwine etc. For all my House & Dance heads be on the look out for the Vinylshakerz new track called Club Tropicana it's the remix of Club Tropicana sang by group sensation WHAM feat George Michael. Brand new Africanism, Bob Sinclair, Benny Benassi doing some fresh stuff, Dave Armstrong, Armand Van Helden, Deep Dish, Madonna, Global Deejays, Stellar Project, Supasonic, Inaya Day, Cabin Crew & many more. Lots of goodies so come & represent & you will be blown away at the way we do things. I had a blast doing this interview thank you to BEFORELASTCALL & the BEFORELASTCALL FAMILY! & to all the masses... keep on jumpin'!

Until the next time my friends
